Site Journal March, 2008

01:59 - March 19th, 2008 - Paul

A site journal! Capital idea, Dani! Guess which MP's office was recorded as a visitor to our site? Paul Dewar, come on down! Welcome, my good sir, to our website. We look forward to working with you! :P Now, if you have a photo you'd like to submit which we could use instead of the Frowny-Face, just click that link! That goes for the rest of you too…

What a neat thing this all is… I'm so glad we got a hit from somebody in Mr. Dewar's office searching our site. I hope that, by, say, three months after our official launch (date to be determined) that we'll have at least one hit from each MP. Hey… the system works! Who knew?

Dani and I painstakingly created an alphabetical master list of MPs which will end up in the navigation panel on the left.

Yeah, a good deal of the 109 hits thus far have been from my IP address, but I finally figured out how to block my own addy from being counted. So, from here on in, the hits are legit!

We're looking at a LOT of groundwork to compile voting records for each government bill (C-2 - C-200) before we can officially launch the site. I figure that we should at least have the main bills up before taking off the 'under construction' tag.

Things are looking pretty good, though, and I'm so excited to provide this service to my fellow concerned or curious citizens.

Check back soon and often, because we'll be ready to go in a few short weeks.

Did you see the goal Toskala let in tonight? Eeeeeeeee.

Not much to report today, but I finished up the entries for Bill C-2, so we've actually got one whole bill done! Hooray!

Even though we're still under construction, we're still getting a fair number of hits. Many of these are Canadian in origin, which makes me excited for the potential of the site.

OK, Bleach is ready to be watched. Bleach > politics. Duh.

Webgineer's Log, Page Date :05

I've started fleshing-out the "contact info" and for the next couple days i'll be filling-out the information & maps! This whole thing is turning-out easier and better than expected. Our major challenges currently are:

- Google hit description
- Initiating Google Analytics
- Site map streamlining
- Implementation of graphics
- … and the sheer amount of work left! :)

But i have to say, i'm enjoying the challenge of learning the wiki syntax!

Put in about 4 1/2 hours so far today. That accomplished the first two votes on Bill C-3 in their entirety… only the Third Reading vote to come yet and then we'll have our second bill complete. Small steps.

I also corrected the date of the report stage vote on each MP's recipe card. All because of a silly copy-and-paste mistake. oh well… I'm learning.

As much as I'd love to write code for the next eight hours or so, I'm off to the Canucks game.

Wow… officially an overnighter. The first of many, no doubt. Dani's rocking the maps and contact info, and I've been working on vote stuff and fixing my previous errors. (Bryson, Gaudin, and Hearne). I've almost finished off Bill C-3 and links to everyone. Three recorded votes on C-3. Can't we all just get along?

The vote table on the recipe cards definitely needs to be streamlined. I think we'll finish off the gov't bills first and then make it look pretty.

287 hits and counting! Thanks for your patience, folks.

Well, we're coming along quite nicely now. I've got C-2 to C-7 done. My brain hurts from reading Hansard transcriptions. Trying to find information in there is insane! I wonder if the Web 2.0 will have to deal with a Beaurocracy 2.0?

There is so very little information on what Bill C-7 is actually ABOUT that you would never guess that a good three hours of reading Hansard went into the eleven lines of type on that page. Not even a recorded vote to show for my efforts!

Our first board meeting is this afternoon at 14:00 over some excellent butter chicken. Jealous? You're jealous.

Today was a bit of a catch-up day for me. I've stream-lined a lot of pages by renaming them into some semblance of an organized manner. This is allowing the link function between pages work out splendidly. I am, however, going to leave to MP vote tallies until I've finished Bill descriptions and summaries. So much reading! I think I'm going to add a fourth column to the recipe cards to differentiate between the C-## and Name of each bill and vote.

Dani's already into Ontario for the mapping and contact info. Looks like I've got some catching up to do!

The last few hours have been spent re-writing summaries and histories of bills C-2 to C-20. This got rid of some wordy language from the actual bills themselves. This is one of the driving reasons I have for co-founding this site. Parliament should be for everyone.

Dani's still kicking butt on contact info and the map.

Also today, we got keepthemhonest.ca to redirect to the wikidot.com site. It's masked, but hopefully that will change tomorrow.

Hoo boy, we're kicking butt now! Up to 558 hits and we're still a few days away from officially launching. With any luck we'll have the current bills, MP contacts and map, vote results, and individual vote results ready to go for the resumption of parliament on Monday, March 31st.

One note… I corrected Sukh Dhaliwal's party affiliation (Liberal) on the vote lists. I had him as NDP. Sorry, Sukh!

Soooo… have you checked out which wikidot site has the most edits? :) Go and see!

Wow… almost done the bills! Parliament's back in session tomorrow and we'll be taking the "under construction" tag off in the next couple of days. Dani's almost through Ontario for contacts, and is almost ready to move into Quebec.

Three bills are missing on the parliament website. Weird, eh? Hmmm… Anyhow, I called the Parliamentary Library and asked for either a return call or an e-mail of the bills. We'll see how that goes. For the record, the missing bills are C-35, C-48, and C-49. It's hard to ask your MP about a bill when it's nowhere to be found.

07:33 - March 31th, 2008 - Paul

OK… here it is. Kinda really tired right now. The morning sun hurts my tired eyes, but those eyes are filled with the promise of awesomeness. At 06:00 pacific this morning (9:00am on the Hill), we got 11 hits within one minute… all from Parliament Hill. They know. And now, so do you! (or at least you will, by the end of this week).

All the bills are done, with the exception of C-35, C-48, and C-49. Why? Because they're missing from the parliament website. I called the Library of Parliament to ask for copies of these bills, but all I got back was a link to the master bill page on parl.gc.ca.

Stay tuned… things are getting interesting now!

Lynne at the Library of Parliament has been helpful by assisting me in the navigation of C-35's text. For some reason it's different from all the others in that you have to read it as if it was ready to be printed. So, it turns out that was there all along, but very difficult to get to. It has now been restored.
