Summary

This bill increases the maximum penalties for cruelty to animals. Killing or poisoning cattle, dogs, birds or "other animals kept for a legal purpose" is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and/or up to 18 months in prison.

The prison term for animal prize-fighting is up to five years.

This bill is the same as S-213 from the previous session of parliament. It was re-introduced on November 29th, 2007, and was deemed read a second time, and was sent to committee. The committee reported back on February 15th, 2008.
